By Dr. Mohamed Nimer

Key Features

At this time — when the need for understanding and unity among Americans of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds is greater than ever, this unique and important work constitutes an invaluable resource both for Muslims and for anyone seeking a clear and accurate perspective on the American Islamic experience.

This guide examines:

  • How American Muslims satisfy the demands of citizenship, while maintaining their ethnic and religious identities
  • How Muslim life in North America differs from that in Muslim-majority countries
  • Relations between Muslim groups in the US and Canada, and relations between them and Muslims overseas
  • How activist immigrants with prior exposure to Islamic revivalist ideas are adjusting to living in North America
  • And more...

Exploring the mainstream American Muslim community up close and in-depth, this guide briefly traces the history of Islam in the US and Canada, and offers a fascinating and informative introduction to Islamic values and institutions. It assesses such issues as American Muslims' perception of themselves, their differences from and similarities to Muslims in Islamic countries, and how they have adapted to life and work in the secular societies of the US and Canada whilst maintaining the cultural and religious practices of Islam.

This book also depicts the responses of Muslim media organizations, charities, and community support structures in the wake of 9/11. It shows them coping with the loss of loved ones in the World Trade Center, the growing incidence of fear-fuelled hate crimes, and an increased barrage of attacks upon their religion and way of life.

Packed with data designed to serve researchers and Muslims alike, this unique resource includes useful tables and analyses of population statistics, immigration, and participation in the political process as well as an extensive directory of more than 130 pages that list both websites and local contact details for the organizations that support today's mainstream US and Canadian Muslim community.

The most up-to-date, thorough guide to the Islamic communities of the US and Canada, The North American Muslim Resource Guide is an indispensable road-map for any reader who hopes to move past the boundary of ethnic and religious stereotypes to view the human face behind one of the fastest-growing and most vital populations in North America.

  • A unique resource on the American Muslim community
  • Provides useful tables and analyses of population statistics, immigration, and political participation
  • Addresses responses to 9/11 and other recent events in Muslim communities through North America
  • Includes illuminating sidebars
